Summer Trend 2009: Grecian Dresses

It is so hot in the summer that I'm all about being casually cool. My summer calendar is stocked full of barbeques, birthday parties, etc. and nothing gets me out the door quicker than a perfectly fitted dress. The Grecian style has become one of my go-to faves because of its ethereal feel and 'ol school Shakespeare kiss me now/ask questions later quality.

The dress takes a traditional spin on the Grecian style. When I look at this set I'm transported to the wooded glen of a Midsummer's Night dream where I would have been smart enough to follow my heart to my true love....Puck and all.

This dress has an urban feel with a street sensibility that would easily translate at one of my early evening soirees. Plus when the temp drops later in the evening, I could throw on that spectacular kimono and be good to go.

People ask me all the time how I stay so fashionably chic on a budget and I typically answer with "It's good luck I guess. The fashion gods have truly blessed me with a unique gift." While this answer gets several laughs, it really doesn't give them the insight they are looking for. So I think it's time to give to y'all straight.

Do You Love Me? by bady_29 featuring Miu Miu shoes

Understand what type of clothing looks good on your body type. This may seem elementary to many of you but I can't tell you how many times I pass women in my travels who have yet to gasp this concept.
If you're a size 6, why are you stuffing yourself into a 4? Ladies really, there is no need to buy garments which are too small. This may work for Beyonce but none of us have her trainer, chef or wonderful hubby to keep us motivated. If you buy clothes with hope that you'll fit into them one day, that day never comes and now you have a closet full of shoulda, coulda, woulda. Stop torturing yourself and buy clothes that fit TODAY!
Proper undergarments are essential. I really can't stress this one enough girls. The right kind of bra can work wonders in your favorite tee and the right undies can erase the VPL in your lil' black dress. Go get fitted for your correct bra size (I like Nordstrom) and go back every 6 months to get re-fitted. Figure out which brand of undies work best for you (there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with Hanes. Who says we have to spend $25 on panties anyway?) and buy all your favorite styles and colors.

Since Herve Leger's reappearance in 2007, his designs have been seen on some of the hottest celebrities in Hollywood.

Who is Herve Leger?

A french fashion designer who grew to notoriety in the early 90s. His departure from the loose, long shapes of that time garnered him a strong celebrity following. In his early years, he was an assistant to Karl Lagerfield, a designer for Chanel, an assistant at Lanvin and assistant to Diane von Furstenburg.

What makes Leger's designs so unique?

He uses a combination of Lycra and spandex based fabrics to pull the female frame into the ideal hourglass shape.

Which celebrity wore it best?

While some celebs can pull of his style better than others, his "bandage" style has definitely become a signature in Hollywood. My favorites are Cassie (yellow dress, top left) and Christina Milan (purple dress, top right).

So how much will this dress cost ME?

With many of his pieces priced well above $1000, this is one designer who has a more affluent clientele in mind.

Alexander McQueen has a whimsical approach to women's fashion. Most of his pieces look great on the red carpet but could rarely translate outside of Hollywood. I love it!

ME Favorites: Paying Tribute to YSL

YSL has done it again with the release of the Tribute handbag. Complete with all of the attributes of a classic handbag, the Tribute also has a touch of uptown sensibility. I am so heart broken that I missed the YSL sale a couple of weeks back on RueLaLa. This bag was featured in purple which will be a huge color for fall. With that said, I love it so much that I may be willing to pay full retail. First, let ME check with my landlord and see if she'll be ok not receiving my rent next month....

I've always been drawn to dresses with strong graphic prints and a unique flair. This Milly strapless dress is the perfect frock which could easily transition from the nightclub to a wedding reception. I really love the black patent belt and I'd probably add a pair of black patent pumps to complete the look. For finishing touches, I'd add a cute clutch is a bold color like fuchsia and several rhinestone bangles for a touch of sparkle.

Although I'm not a fan of the Marie Antoinette movie, I fell in love with all of the wonderful costumes. Kirsten Dunst makes living in luxury look effortless as she is transported around in horse drawn carriages wearing lovely flowing Victorian gowns. Winner of the 2006 Academy Award for Best Costume, Marie Antoinette has proven to be one of my favorite visual inspirations. Even though Halloween is many months away, I think I just found my costume.

Can you believe it's been two years already? Boy does time fly! I remember when I first started this blog and look at what it's grown into now! AMAZING! Each year, I like to re-visit last year's goal to see what progress I've made so here it goes:

Get my blog ranked 7 on Google (well guys I'm still a 4 but I can't complain)
Add some contributing writers (I'm still looking. Contact ME if you're interested)
Exchange links with more established blogs (still working on this one. There's just not enough hours in the day!)
Become a blogger for hire (I accomplished this one! YIPPEE! I start my new position today!)
Get some press (i.e. I'd love a write up in a mainstream fashion publication) for my blog (still working on this one as well)

This year I'd like to:

Give my blog a face lift (complete with new web design and URL. Know of any affordable web designers?)
Start my own blogtalk radio show (any ideas on show content?)
Renew my love for fashion styling (I was a fashion stylist for awhile & worked for a ton of fashion shows, mags and honestly got burnt out. I miss it a great deal and want to slowly re-introduce myself to it.)
Create more opportunities for dialogue (i.e. blogtalk radio) with my readers (do you have any ideas?)

Please join ME as I celebrate this great milestone and welcome the many blessings to come.

What is a Maxi Dress?

A long skirt or dress which gained popularity in the 70's. My favorites are the ones which feature vibrant graphic prints or awesome summer colors. This season you can find them just about everywhere and available at every price point.

How do I wear it?

With a ton of accessories or with none at all depending on your preference. Add flip flops or gladiator sandals during the day and bejeweled or heeled sandal for night.

Who can wear it?

Just about anybody. I prefer the look on the tall ladies myself (hey, I'm over 6' ft so I'm a little bias) but my shorter gals can pull the look off as well. The key is ensure that you show some skin (i.e. halter, sleeveless or tube top dresses) and your dress should stop a little before your ankle.

Why are you obsessed?

Who has time to get ready these days? Between my conference calls and endless meetings, a girl has schedule in bathroom breaks. A maxi dress is an instant outfit that can get ME out of the door in 15 secs flat. Makeup? I can do that during one of my conference calls.

Nothing makes ME happier than a beach tote that doubles as a handbag. All of these totes are super easy to carry, provide tons of room but more importantly, many serve double duty. I like my totes with tons of pockets, some kind of protector at the bottom (i.e. leather or those little silver pegs so that my items don't get wet) and extremely durable. Summer 2008 Trend: Graphic Mini Skirts

Since I'm over 6", I have to approach this trend with caution. One good San Francisco breeze and I could be showing all the world my business. I like to wear my minis with boy shorts, flat sandals for daytime and killer heels at night. For my girls with a larger bottom half, I recommend selecting a mini with a darker background to down play one of your greater assets. 1. What is the story behind the name of your blog?

Let ME start by saying that Margarite Elaine is not my name. I get tons of emails addressed to her and it's hilarious! Margarite Elaine is a combination of me and my sister's middle name. I wanted something that sounded like an identity or alter ego so Margarite Elaine was born. I also operate a fashion jewelry company of the same name.

2. Why did you start blogging in the first place?

To get the word out about my jewelry company. The blog slowly morphed into the fashion weblog that you read today. It has more than tripled in readership numbers since I started in the Summer of 2006 which is freakin' amazing!

3. What is your best blogging experience? Your worst?

Best: I love when readers write to ME or leave comments that my posts inspired a purchase. Its extremely humbling and a fantastic blessing to know that my words are valued. It's also great when retailers or PR companies reach out and ask for my help promoting a product. That's always fun!

Worst: Honestly, when I first started no one wanted to talk to ME. I would send out link swap requests and get totally dissed. However as my numbers grew, I was eventually able to get all of my favorite bloggers' attention. Wait, I'm still working on one :). To all my new bloggers out there, persistence is the name of the game. Don't give up! Success will come...it'll just take some time.

4. What do you think will happen to your blog in 2008?

NY Fashion Week: Style Resolutions

With today marking the start of New York's infamous Fashion Week, we'll be bombarded with many new trend and style choices. Every year, I fall victim to the trendiest pieces only to find them at the bottom of my hamper six months later. However, this year I wanted to start Fashion Week off with a clean slate. Don't get ME wrong, I'll still drool over the newest "IT bag" and secretly wish I was sitting front row in the tents, but instead I'll treat Fashion Week like an "observers' sport". I stylishly resolve to watch, wait and only buy those trend items that truly speak to ME.

If I was this conflicted, I figured I couldn't be alone. I polled various fashion/beauty bloggers over the net to get their Style Resolutions for 2008. Some attacked this task with great precision while others chose powerful one-liners. From veterans to newbies, bloggers where up for the challenge and happily stated their "two cents". Allow to ME introduce to you to the stylish bloggers who made the cut...

"As always, I'm stocking up on f**k-shoes, and hemming my flapper frocks higher. I figure life's short. Your skirt should be, too." Kristopher Dukes

NY $pender is CURBING THE SHOPAHOLIC. She resolves to "save more, splurge sometimes, and eliminate the useless spending".

Fashionalities has committed to "professional pedis at least once a month, and upkeep between times."

Urban Darling, resolves to "have a custom made navy pinstripe suit." When I asked her why navy she stated, "Navy is a cyclical color, we'll see it now and then it's gone." Who knew?

The BudgetDiva will, "...create a new sense of minimalism, declutter, and only keep those items that I truly love. I mean really who wants to put on something just because its there, at the end of the day you want to feel great in your clothing."

Fashion Kitty purrs, "[I want] to revamp my wardrobe using the pieces I already own. For example, today [interviewed on 01.07.08] I am wearing a Betsey Johnson python skirt and top from 2004. But I jazzed it up with a over-sized sweater and i meghan fabulous belt for a new spin on it." Sounds super cute!

Canadian Beauty wants to "try wearing as little makeup as possible this year. I know that it might sound strange if you're familiar with my blog, but I don't want to have a face full of stuff all the time. "

Here's what Jolie in NYC had to say, "I resolve to approach my beauty routine this year with adult precision. This is the year I will finally get manicures! (Or at least stop chewing my cuticles.) This is the year I will start waxing things! (Or at least invest in a real razor, instead of the Bics I steal from the gym.) This is the year...eh, who am I kidding? I resolve to make an attempt to be less lazy with beauty. But no promises."

Omiru's resolution is to give their hugely popular site a makeover. Their goal is easier navigation so all of you fashionistas can find the tips and tricks you yearn for. The site's Editor in Chief, "is determined to clean out her closet and donate clothes she hasn't worn in at least a year."

The Style Spy says, "No More Meh". And I quote, "I'm not bringing anything home to hang in my closet unless it makes me giddy with Fashionista Glee. To that end, I've already returned a skirt I bought last week. It was a perfectly serviceable brown A-line skirt, but it was meh. No more meh!!" Right on sista!

Dree chimes in, "This year I am challenging myself to create more adventure in my styling; add more unexpected elements; all the while keeping the look somewhat under-accessorized."

OMG I Love Her Style promises "to sweat the small things". She resolves to keep her nails on trends (navy nail polish, anyone?), get an up-to-date haircut (can you say, curly layers?), perfect her makeup and accessorize every outfit with stylish jewelery. A stylish lady after my own heart.

The Grand Mademoiselle wants "to learn how to walk properly in high heels." She says, "Although I wear them almost everyday and can walk in a straight line, my posture causes the outside edge of each heel to rub away, resulting in a slightly off-kilter strut that looks more like a horse on roller skates and less like a lady." I love a stylish girl with a sense of humor.

Peggy Li says, "Before I purchase anything new, to go through my closets and donate anything I haven't worn in the past year to charity (and in time for tax returns!)." This our second donation diva. I think I need to jump on the bandwagon!

Karinaxoxo screams, "Quantity over Quality!" She explains, "The thing is - every season I throw away/give away so many pieces...I figure if I spend the same amount on 3 or 4 tops as I would normally on one - I won't have a problem throwing something away after one season. I have my first chain store shopping spree this weekend - and I can't wait to see what $200 can get me!"

Czela Bellies confuses she will, "NEVER, I mean NEVER pull one single more price tag or hangtag off a new garment. No matter how lazy I might feel, I pledge to find the scissors! I've RUINED so many new garments because of my ahem, anxiousness!" Amen to that one sista!

I believe the Petite Fashionista wraps it up very nicely, "...the bottom line is that I will only do what I feel is true to me and that I hope in return means I can give more to others. " And that's the best resolution of all.
