One of my gfs send me this fabulous email about growing up in the 80s and I loved it! It brought back some wonderful memories and I thought it'd be fun to reminisce with my readers. Feel free to post some of your 80s/90s memory flashbacks in the comments below. Here's some of the email's highlights:

Frantic Friday

So sorry about the late post! Yesterday was so hectic and I ran out of time to post. Let's get to it......

THIS or THAT Tuesday Reveal
This Halloween costume is one of my favorites and many of you agreed with me. It's the Petite Pirate from Costumes by ShindigZ and retails for $29.99. With a variety of sizes (3T-4T or 4-6X), it's the perfect costume for the little princess in your life.

Crazy Sale!
So I just happened to be shopping yesterday and ran into my local Guess store. I ran across one hell of a sale! Mostly, everything in the store was 70% off and I got a cute waist clinch belt for $3.00. Crazy! Unbelievable! The sale ends Saturday 8/26 so get in there ASAP!

Weekend Accessories

$7.60 at Asos.com
I've always loved accessorising my cell phone. I've rhinestoned a couple and have bought some wonderful cases. This cell phone charm will allow me to add some spice my phone with the commitment anxiety that rhinestones sometimes cause.

$11.40 at Asos.com
I'm totally into the Fleur De Lys trend but have hesitated to purchase anything because of the ridiculous price tag. This necklace has the right price and won't cause buyer's remorse next season when the Fleur De Lys trend has passed.

Enjoy your weekend!

Styl'd to a "T"

I've been a busy lady! With all my shoots and fashion shows, I've barely have time to come up for air. If any of you know someone in the San Francisco Bay Area who'd be interested in assisting a stylist, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I'm drowning over here and could really use the help.

I have a fashion show scheduled on Thursday (I'm not working it but have been asked to attend and help with the creative process) and a photoshoot on Saturday. The shoot Saturday should be straight forward because it's one model/one look. Hopefully I'll get home before midnight! The photog on this one is a bit controlling (actually wanted to shop with me to select the garments) and it's making me a bit uncomfortable. Luckily, I was able to do some shopping today while he was at work so I put an end to that.

Lastly, I just rec'd a cd from one of my shoots a couple of weeks back. The photos turned out great! I've included a couple of pics to make your mouthwater. If you want to see more, visit my other blog.
Enjoy!

Styl'd to a "T"

So sorry for posting so late today guys! Things have been crazy! I just wanted to be sure to give you an update about my latest job. I received payment on yesterday! YIPPEE! Usually stylists have to wait months to receive payment so I'm happy to have gotten mine so quickly. The client also covered the pull fees which is an added bonus. Here's where the plot thickens (please forgive my long winded rambling)....

When I went to pick up my check from the client yesterday, I had to wait over an hour for the Publisher (i.e. the one who handles the money) to get in the office. When I was in the office, the Creative Director asked for my assistance on another shoot. They are shooting a sunglass editorial and she wanted me to secure some sunglasses for the shoot. After all the drama that I endured on my last project with them, I wasn't about to sign up for another beating! Since I hadn't rec'd my pymt yet, I couldn't be rude but I had to gracefully decline. However, I did sit and brainstorm with her to develop ideas on where she could get the sunglasses she needed. Am I willing to help? Yes. Am I willing to do it for you? No.

So when the Publisher finally showed up (supposedly another shoot had run over), I allowed his staff to select the items they would like to keep. Usually when there's a pull fee involved, some clients want to keep selected merch while others opt just to pay the fee. It really varies from client to client. The items were selected and we were good to go or at least I thought. When the Publisher begins writing out my check, the owner of the magazine prances over and proclaims that they've never paid a stylist to work on their editorials before. I really shocked! She also said that she gave the Publisher a hard time (i.e. cursed him out) for agreeing to pay my fee. In my mind I was thinking, "Why is she telling me this? This is so unprofessional!" She then starts to complain about the pull fees saying she had never incurred pull fees before and didn't understand why they had to pay them. Oh and to make matters worse she says, "If you continue to charge us fees then we won't use you again." I just stood there silently and listened to her ramble. Then the Creative Director chimed in. She was upset that she had to pay the other stylist that worked with me. She said that the original agreement between them was editorial credits (no money was to exchange hands). She (creative director) begins to lie on the other stylist saying that she had called her yelling and screaming about payment. Which I know is totally untrue because she (creative director) doesn't even deal with money. The Creative Director then starts to blame me saying that I had to have told her that I was getting paid (and so what if I did.....Why is it a secret?). This is where I had to draw the line......

I told both ladies that their behavior was very unprofessional and I don't have to explain my actions to them. I stated that I was running a business and could not afford to perform my services for free. Just as they expect payment for their subscriptions, I expect payment for my services. I made it painfully clear that if they were unwilling to pay my fees that I had no problem with them using someone else. Lastly, I informed them that whatever agreement they had with the other stylist had absolutely nothing to do with me and I would appreciate them not turning this into a personal matter. I mean how RIDIC is that? Give me a break! Last time I checked, the North won the war and slavery came to an end. The nerve of some ppl! I have more to share but I'll save that for tomorrow. Stay Tuned!

Styl'd to a "T"

Yesterday my friends at What's Haute asked a great question : "How did you get into styling?" So here's my story......

I've always had a knack for style and my friends came to me with their wardrobe troubles. While attending school at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) in San Francisco, I had a talk with my career counselor. I told her what I wanted to do and she immediately shut me down. She gave me this lame schpill about how most ppl are only stylists part time and it's not realistic for me to expect to make a career out of styling. What a bitch! But that was all I needed to get my fire burning and develop my love of style into a career. So I scoured the pages of craigslist to find a stylist needing an assistant. I found one, sent a reply, scheduled an interview and the rest is history. She gave me the start I needed to boost my confidence and totally step out on faith. I got my first tear sheets and networked my way into styling photoshoots. Being a stylist is hard work but for the first time in my life, I truly enjoy what I do. Today's lesson: Always follow your dreams inspite of what others may say. My next step is getting represented by an agency. STAY TUNED!

This weekend was crazy for me! Two photoshoots and 7 models later....I've just gotten my head above water.

I finally got the clothing, shoes and accessories for my Friday shoot. I frantically ran around Friday morning gathering everything together. Thank God I'm a quick thinker otherwise I would've had butt-naked models :). Once I arrived at the shoot, there were all these ppl hanging around (that's normal) but I came to find out later who all these ppl were. They were the freakin' friends/family of the magazine. How unprofessional!! However, the photographer put them to work so I can't really complain :). Then to top things off, the creative director was running around yelling and screaming at everyone trying to get things done. Just RIDIC! At one point I had to calmly let her know that her yelling was not helping the situation and it would be best if she allowed me to do my job. I probably ruffled a couple of feathers but I'd had enough! All in all, the models were beautiful, the cars were exquisite, and the photos are stunning. As soon as I get the final copies, I'll be sure to post a link for your review. Now there's the matter of my invoice....stay tuned!

My shoot Saturday went off without a hitch. The creative team (myself, mua, hairstylist and his assistant, photog and model) all gelled and we had a great synergy. Everyone loved my clothing selections (would you expect anything less? :)) and I'm sure the photos will turn out great. The model really knew how to move which bought the clothing to life. I wish all my photoshoots could be this seamless. Again, I post a link to the final photos as soon as I get the final copies.

Styl'd to a "T"

If you've been keeping up with my chronicles as a stylist, you're abreast on the latest info. When a stylist (ME) is hired by a client, 9 times out of 10 we are allotted a budget for clothing. Some retailers charge stylists "pull fees" for using their garments. These pull fees can range anywhere from 20% or more of the total "pull" (i.e. if the merch you want to use totals $1000 with a pull fee of 20%, you'd pay the retailer a non-refundable fee of $200). Now some retailers will waive those fees in exchange for editorial credits (i.e. take a look at the newest editorial spread in your favorite fashion mag. Usually at the bottom of each page, they'll tell you where to get the featured outfit, along with prices, etc. That's editorial credits).

I gave that long explanation, to lay for foundation for newest development in current editorial project. This particular client (the same one from my Monday post) has built relationships with local retailers so they can have their pull fees waived. Great! That makes my job a lot easier! But here's the catch. The location where I can "pull" from doesn't have the greatest merch and on top of that, I can't get in contact with their liaison. It's very frustrating and I'm 'bout ready to throw up my hands! I mean it's like they expect me to produce a miracle. The shoot is in a couple of days and I HAVE NO CLOTHES! And let's not even talk about shoes and accessories. That's another topic for another day. Oh the trials and tribulations of a stylist. Stay tuned.

Today has been such a crazy day. It's 10:00 PM (Pacific) and I still haven't eaten dinner. However when I saw this necklace, I immediately regained my center. It reminds me of my childhood days when things were much simplier and recess was the highlight of my day.

Styl'd to a "T"

So today has been a crazy day at ME. I've been busy talking to clients, making deals and planning strategies from my next photoshoot. For those of you who don't know I also "moonlight" as a wardrobe stylist. This keeps me really busy and I'm constantly running to boutiques to get clothing for my next shoot. It just so happens that my next project will be published in a magazine (I'm so excited) and today was the 1st day in a series of meetings. So in today's meeting, I discovered 2 things:

  1. The photographer can't make it due to a death in the family
  2. The models are WAY TOO SHORT (we're talking 5'4 and that's a big no-no for editorial shoots)

I immediately switched to fire-fighter mode and began to discuss a plan of action with the publisher. Here I was thinking that my client has selected agency models and boy was I wrong (first rule of the game: ASSUME NOTHING)! I had to politely tell them that their models were too short and they needed agency girls (tall, skinny...u know the type). I then proceeded to call my contacts at the local modeling agencies to secure some girls for our shoot. Then I pulled out my rusty trusty roladex to call some of my photog friends and check availability. Thanks to my quick thinking (you can call me Quick Draw McGraw) and savvy connections, I was able to save our shoot. It's all in a day work!

Sizzl'n Snakes

We eyed these snakeskin bangles a couple of weeks back but delayed our purchases due to sticker shock. Now these beauties are on sale and we've got to snag a couple. Ted Rossi really out did himself with these. They are wonderful delights of snakeskin perfection.

Purely by chance, we visited our local Anthropologie today to get a peek at their new fall merchandise. Somehow we got sidetracked over to the home department and found the deal to end ALL deals. Please brace yourself because what we have to share is a bit shocking :)! We found cups and plates starting at $1.95. Yes......$1.95 (the prices were orginally $20 and higher). But wait there's more! It's a bird, it's a plane...

Although we haven't had the pleasure of seeing the new Superman movie (isn't that Brandon Routh a hottie?), we can release our inner super powers with this necklace. It's a lovely pave CZ pendant on a wonderful sterling silver chain. Now we can all flaunt an "S" on our chest.
